Artist Profile – Johnny Turner

Currently recognised through awards and commissions as one of the country’s leading sculptors, Johnny Turner, has developed a substantial arts practice using volcanic and metamorphic rock. His work reveals both an intuitive response to materials, as well as an interest in Western and Japanese aesthetics. Turner describes the exhibition ‘The Passing of Time’ as encompassing work; ‘sculpted in the very material and minerals our own fleeting selves are made from -millions of years old immortal stone, forms that evoke time and space. Recycled stone suggests themes of resurrection and rejuvenation-the rock cycle and the human life-cycle.’ Turner’s work was recently included in the Hong Kong Tin Wai International Sculpture Symposium and in 2006 he was the winner of the 9th Manukau Vessel and Sculpture Exhibition and Award.
