Linda James has practised art-making for the last twenty five years. Since 1999, she has produced a body of figurative paintings informed by the idea of chaos. James addresses this theme quite literally in those of her works depicting acts of war and violence. However, what really drives James’ activity is the chaotic life of the image in the current epoch, and what this implies for traditional notions of identity and moral agency. In this respect, James’ appropriations of Western Art History and the contemporary news media reject the nihilism that permeates some postmodern discourses in favour of an almost neo-Humanist revalidation of the individual.
Linda James holds a Diploma of Fine Arts (Hons), University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts.
