In Neither Use nor Ornament Canterbury artist Brendan Ryan presents a new body of work that pays tribute to the foundation of his practice. His use of found objects whose surfaces have been worn, scoured and weathered act as the beginning point for their reinvention art works. Ryan notes that the marks and materials he works with act as a kind of working drawing for the final resolved art work. In their surfaces and sense of intuition, Ryan’s organic imagery acknowledge their interest in the art of Antonio Tápies and an art brut aesthetic art brut that remains in a state of evolution and intention to avoid the constraints of familiar painting traditions. Neither Use nor Ornament follows a highly solo successful exhibition of Ryan’s work in 2007.
