Artist Profile – Stone Maka


Stone Maka was born and raised in Tonga and imigrated to New Zealand in 1997 . The following year Maka attainted Whitecliffe College of Art and Design and completed a Certificate of Art and Design. In 2002 Maka continued his studies at Manukau School of Visual Arts at the University of Auckland and completed a Bachelor of Visual Art.

Maka’s work reflects his homeland of Tonga and uses traditional Pacific arts with the modern Western forms of absraction.

Maka now resides locally in Christchurch.

Stone Maka has work in the following collections:

  • Paintings for the Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs, Christchurch;
  • Stone sculpture for Methodist church, Maui, Hawaii
