For more than three decades, Fane Flaws has enjoyed success in a variety of artistic media. Chameleon-like, he has worked as a musician (with the now-legendary, 1970s, multi-media circus BLERTA), filmmaker, graphic artist, director of music videos (for the likes of Jenny Morris, Dave Dobbyn and The Mutton Birds), animator (Flaws created the guitar-playing angel in Radio With Pictures), writer, illustrator, printmaker and painter. Bold graphics and bright colours are signature features of Flaws’ paintings. Characteristically eclectic, his playfully postmodern work draws freely from the legacy of surrealism, pop, comics and graffiti art, and often cites New Zealand art history (Colin McCahon and Michael Illingworth seem to be points of reference).
