Fiona Gedson works from a straw-bale design studio in the Eastern Bay of Plenty, within the boundaries of the Whakatohea iwi, with whom she has a familial relationship. Growing up in the presence of the Tuhoe people, Gedson developed an affinity for traditional crafts – particularly those associated with textiles and weaving. Initially developing her skills under the expert guidance of kuia from Gisborne, Gedson later complemented this tutelage by attending courses and night classes. The fruits of this dedicated effort are clearly visible in her exquisitely crafted kete (constructed from feathers, shells and wire) and her recent, large-scale, mandala-shaped feather works.
