The Margaret Stoddart Prize is from the Estate of Canterbury artist, Margaret Stoddart (1865-1934) and is valued at $2,000. The judge for this award in 2009 is art consultant Rachael Slade and the award winner will be announced at the opening of the exhibition Tuesday 24 February at 5.30pm. In compliance with the wishes of the Estate, the Margaret Stoddart Prize is to be awarded to an artist for ‘work in connection with the painting of flora native to New Zealand.’ Past winner of the award include Catherine Brough and Stone Maka. Stoddart studied at the Canterbury College School of Art and is New Zealand’s best-known watercolourist and Impressionist painter of flowers. She exhibited with the Canterbury Society of Arts from 1883 until her death in 1934, and at the Royal Academy and Paris Salon during the 1990s.
