Jane Barry - 'Keeping Sight of The Shore'

North Gallery, 18th March–4th April 2009

In Keeping Sight of the Shore, printmaker Jane Barry’s evocative landscapes engage the viewer on an aesthetic and emotion level. Barry comments: ‘Inspiration for my work comes mostly from the Peninsula, Canterbury and coastal landscapes and seascapes. My previous works were a Shag Rock series, dedicated to my precious daughter Charley, who died at birth. This new exhibition entitled “Keeping Sight of the Shore” is also based around aspects of the beach and peninsula, though less specific, as if they might appear in a dream. Some squally, dark, and haphazard which I hope evoke a sense of movement to the viewer, some intended more calm, windless and ethereal. I dedicate this show to my beautiful son Isaac, who arrived safely a year ago and helps me everyday to not lose sight of the shore...’ Barry was a finalist in 2005 in the Cranleigh Barton Award and the COCA Anthony Harper Award for Contemporary Art. She has work in private collections and the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu.
