Jaimee Peters

Canaday Gallery, 8th–26th April 2009

In images that move constantly between an effortless and uneasy tension from abstraction to representation, Jamie Peters’ art recognises the ambiguities of formalist painting. Signs and symbols that seek to represent the real world are wedged and transformed within the surfaces of the picture plane, anticipating visual resolution, while the eye moves incessantly over the painted surface. Peters’ art reconsiders the act of painting, challenging the subjectivity of the creative act and maintaining a tension between ‘an ambiguous and detached formalism.’ Peters completed a BFA in Painting at the University of Canterbury SFA in 2008.
