Southern Muster is an exhibition and symposium which considers contemporary South Island craft/object art and surveys a range of ideologies and processes, identifying artists recognised for the quality of their practice. It places senior practitioners alongside up and coming craftspeople, giving status to an emerging generation. It also celebrates their work by recognising that they frequently shift between traditional notions of craft and art with conceptual works alongside design, acknowledging the conceptual, formal and craft of art making. Southern Muster draws attention to the premise that innovation and excellence in craft is more than the technical skill of making, being equally informed by ‘imaginative human experience.’
