Found media is fundamental to Jane Bowman’s practice, which challenge viewer’s ideas of function, form and identity. ‘I have long been interested in insidious objects that are familiar, yet are sometimes hard to identify. I have explored how imagery of such objects can take on new qualities when printed onto, or molded out of diverse materials.’
Shadow and implication of form is integral to this process where seemingly disorganized 2D and 3D objects unexpectedly find lucidity and order when reflected on a crisp white wall. Bowman’s intentions are to confront and distort in order to ultimately bring clarity and beauty to the ordinary.
Bowman has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Canterbury majoring in Printmaking and is currently completing her honours year. This is her first solo exhibition at COCA as part of the Emerging Artists Program.
