Depth and illusion are fundamental aspects of the work in this exhibition by Jacquie Ure and Sarah Mortlock. While on one level Mortlock’s work engages with the architectural space surrounding her work to explore our perception of place ‘and to instigate a subtle restructuring’. Ure’s focus is the illusion of three dimensional depth within sheer abstraction using paint and brush. To each artist a seemingly effortless synergy of colour, line and form develops harmony in the silhouette and perception of these works.
Jacquie Ure graduated from the Elam School of Fine Arts in 2004 and has participated in group and solo exhibitions and has been a finalist in the COCA Anthony Harper and Wallace Awards. Wellington based Sarah Mortlock holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from RMIT University, Melbourne and in September 2008 was the International Artist in Residence at TSKW in Florida. In 2006 she won first prize for abstract painting in the Parklane Art Awards and was also awarded an RMIT NZ MFA Scholarship for excellence.
