Audrey Baldwin - 'Surface Tension'

North Gallery, 12th–29th August 2009

Audrey Baldwin is studying towards a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Canterbury University.  Her practice is primarily performance based and uses the body as a site.  Through performances documented in film and photography as well as ‘doctored cultural artefacts’/assisted ready-mades, she investigates themes such as constructs of feminine identity, power, ritual, sexuality and control as well as public/private and abject/erotic dualities.  Many of Audrey’s works involve the transformation of an everyday personal ritual or object into a public affair.  She aims to involve the viewer and challenge their expectations of art, highlighting their voyeuristic position and/or destabilising it.  She hopes that her work provokes questions about the power relationship between object/subject and the norms and strictures transposed upon us by ourselves and society.
