Kara Burrowes - 'Masquerading as Myself'

Canaday Gallery, 12th–30th August 2009

In Masquerading as Myself, patterns and forms of seemingly humble landscapes, spark the inspiration for a body of work informed by a beauty revealed through an extraction, retranslation of the mundane into the potentially sublime.  Kara Burrowes has a background in Fine Arts, Graphic Design and Landscape Architecture, all of which influence her work which includes elements extracted from the landscape that are often overlooked or considered commonplace. Objects from humble beginnings are translated and repackaged into objects of desire.  Pattern, repetition and obsession are evident with lush surfaces worked up and pared back to reveal and conceal.  Kara graduated from Lincoln University in 1994 with a Landscape Architecture degree (Honours), in 1999 with a degree from The University of Canterbury in Fine Arts (Painting) and in 2000 with a Graduate Diploma (Design) from Christchurch Polytechnic.
