The title of my exhibition “In a biscuit tin under the bed” is a reference to a line in a poem by Jeffrey Paparoa Holman from his book “The Late Great Blackball Bridge Sonnets”. His words capture memories of people, events & a place that had a marked impact on both of our lives, the small West Coast town of Blackball. Jeffrey’s book is now a way for me of getting across time to the past. In a biscuit tin under the bed is where a lot of these memories are stored. In painting these portraits I wanted to honour the people of Blackball (some of whom played a major role in my life) & get them out of “the biscuit tin under the bed”. - Earl Tutty
