Mariko Susu was born in the Northern part of Honshu, Japan and since 2000 has worked as an artist between Japan and New Zealand. Her painting shares a concern with the abstract minimalism of Mark Rothko and the treatment of the picture plane as a restrained and reserved colour-field. Susu’s work can be read almost as narratives that draw from the landscape, or as an evocation of well-being or a spiritual calm. She has exhibited in New Zealand regularly, holding seven solo exhibitions and participating in group shows.
