The Cross is a group exhibition of works by invited artists that follows the success of the collaborative slate tile exhibition and fundraiser that COCA and the Christchurch Cathedral held in 2007. As a symbol that can be traced through history and cultures over the past 4,000 years with associations that are both sacred and secular, the cross remains both a powerful and complex religious emblem open to multiple, open-ended reading and interpretation, as well as a familiar symbol of salvation and hope in Western and Eastern cultures. The exhibition encompasses works by 30 leading and up and coming New Zealand artists, including Don Binney, Dick Frizzell, Gavin Bishop, Philip Trusttum, Tony de Lautour, and Margaret Hudson-Ware. In addition, a publication to accompany the exhibition will include an introduction by Christchurch Cathedral theologian Lynda Patterson and contributions from invited writers and people from a broad range of socio-economic backgrounds. The Cross is an exhibition, fundraiser and event that aims to capture the attention of the wider community.
