John O'Malley - 'Sentinels/Crossings'

Canaday Gallery, 16th December 2009–10th January 2010

Photographer John O’Mally’s images of the land reveal visual and implicit relationships between objects, both manmade and natural, with the surrounding environment. The Sentinels examines the landforms and rocks of the Port Hills, establishing their role as evocative sentinel beings that occupy a timeless presence in this volcanic landscape formed millions of years ago. Crossings, explores the relationship between rural railway road signs and their surrounding environment, alluding to changes in perspective and direction that informs the imposition of roads and rail tracks, as well as the contours of the landscape that they occupy.
