This year marks the tenth anniversary of this annual fundraising art auction co-hosted by COCA and the Christchurch Art Gallery Trust. Over that period, COCA Gallery has held more than 100 solo exhibitions by recent graduates from tertiary institutions in the South Island, and toured group shows of emerging artists to Dunedin and, in 2009, to Webb’s in Auckland, profiling the work of many of these artists, for the first time, to the wider community. In 2010, funds raised for COCA from this annual event will continue to contribute to the gallery’s exhibition programme.
The Christchurch Art Gallery Trust’s share will contribute towards the acquisition of works of art for the Gallery's collection, with funds raised doubled in value by the city council's challenge grant. To date, the Trust has a strong history of assisting with the purchase of key works for Christchurch’s public gallery collection, including ensuring works by Bill Hammond and other local artists have been added. The Trust is also interested in supporting the development of international exhibitions at the Gallery, as well as specific projects, such as senior staff development.
Once again, our collective thanks to all the artists and collectors who have provided works for auction. In particular, we would like to thank those artists who have again created works specifically for this event.
Many thanks also to the patrons who come each year in support of this event. Not only are you able to purchase for your personal collections, but on this occasion, you also provide vital and much-valued support for two of Canterbury’s most important and long-standing art institutions.
The auction will be held Thursday April 22, 6pm
