In 1999
Philip Trusttum began a new series of works based on the activities and
environment of his grandson, William, who was living in the family home in Christchurch. By 2006 the artist’s became pre-occupied with William’s toys and they
form the subject for this current exhibition, All What Trucks. Trusttum
comments that ‘The paintings are of toys from Mattell Inc, Tonka and
Matchbox. These trucks, fire-engines,
tow trucks are in my painting shed for my grandson to play with, when in my
care.’ All What Trucks is however, more
than a gallery exhibition.
Three of the
paintings will be placed in public on billboards on the corner of Fitzgerald/Moorhouse Avenue, 1099 Ferry Road and 359 Brougham Street, Waltham. In addition, the Hoyts Multiplex Cinemas at Westfield, Riccarton will screen images of
works from this series in its advertising prior to the movies. All
What Trucks is an imposing and dynamic body of work from one of the country’s
most significant painters. Throughout
May and June this year, the art of Philip Trusttum will be highly visible
throughout the city, at COCA, on the streets and in the cinema.
