COCA is pleased to offer teachers at primary, intermediate and secondary schools a range of activities and lessons using a variety of media that can be adapted to suit the knowledge, experience and skills of your students. Each lesson plan consists of an outline & supporting visual aids and references to relevant artist models from the COCA collection & further afield. It is recommended to download all components of the lesson plan to gain a full understanding of the potential for each lesson; content can be modified or adapted to suit the specific needs of teachers

Lesson 1. Watercolour:

‘Light and atmosphere’ is an introduction to watercolour methods, traditions of landscape painting and the work of one of NZ’s leading contemporary landscape artists, Simon Edwards.
 
Suitable for Year 4-10 and Level 2-7 of the Visual Arts curriculum.

Lesson 2. Sculpture: Land Art:


Land Art is an introduction to the formal principles of sculpture using nature as the provider of materials. Students will explore both traditional and contemporary approaches to the representation of plant forms using the scientific paintings of the Botanic Society, ‘Grass works’ of Gill Gatfield and 3D examples of Land Art from leading Land Artist Andy Goldsworthy (UK).

Suitable for Year 1-8 and Level 1-5 of the Visual Arts Curriculum.

Lesson 3. Printmaking/mixed media:

Climate change & polar bears

Polar bears and Climate change is an introduction to printmaking and mixed media methods, related to an issue based theme. It focuses upon how contemporary artist Dick Frizzell, Asher Newbury and Maurice Askew have used symbols to communicate their ideas about our world.

Suitable for Year 4-10 and Level 2 – 7 of the Visual Arts Curriculum.
